Holiday Jewellery: Do's and Don'ts

Published on Thursday 16 July 2015

With July being the start of the summer season, lots of us will be turning our attention to our annual holidays and well deserved breaks! For some of us it's a time to relax and take things easy- for others, a time to embark on new adventures. Whichever it is, many holiday makers will take their precious jewellery away with them but for some it may be a decision they come to regret. Here at The Workshop we understand that packing and preparing can be a bit of a nightmare. Therefore we have put together a pre-holiday jewellery check-list to ensure your jewellery is definitely taken care of.

To avoid loss theft or damage firstly ask yourself, "should I take it with me?" If the answer is no, it may be a good idea to take your less expensive jewellery with you instead. However, if you are going to take your precious/sentimental pieces with you, make sure you have adequate insurance for these items before travelling.

We provide valuations for single articles or schedules for multiple pieces with full details and photographs to give your insurer up to date information and you peace of mind.

We recommend you try to keep your jewellery in one place, with you in your hand luggage as oppose to in your suitcase.

On arrival at your destination during check-in, make some enquires into the safe storage facilities. Never leave precious/sentimental jewellery unattended.

Phew. You've arrived safely with your jewellery and now it's finally time to relax.. well, not quite.

With so much previous planning and preparation, the invariable hustle and bustle of travelling, your new sunny surroundings seem so inviting and whilst holidays should be a carefree time to let your hair down, don't forget to take care of the jewellery you did so well in looking after up to now.

Whilst on holiday:

  • Avoid wearing your jewellery in the pool as the chlorine can weaken and discolour precious metals.
  • Sun creams can coat gemstones leaving your bright jewellery looking dull and tired. Bring back the sparkle, clean your jewellery with a soft toothbrush and warm soapy water.

Happy Holidays!
